Cyber Cafe

In 2004 we created a children’s Twilight Cyber Cafe for ages 8 to 13 years old and obtained funding from the BBC Children in Need. This has proven to be extremely popular with waiting lists and many children over the age limit coming back to volunteer their time. Other activities include summer outings, Halloween parties, Christmas parties etc. Our Twilight Cyber Cafe offers an opportunity to young people to come together on a weekly basis and develop their skills through the provision of arts and craft and healthy eating/cooking. The Cyber Cafe offers a range of activities which include the use of IT equipment, educating children how to use the internet safely whilst providing those who do not have internet/computer access at home with an opportunity to use them to complete homework.

A minimum of 3 craft activities takes place weekly. Our onsite cafe offers healthy snacks, meals and drinks at affordable prices. Many of the children choose to eat their evening meal here with friends. The Cyber Cafe is somewhere young children enjoy coming to meet, learn new skills and have fun in a safe and friendly environment. There are no other similar activities which take place within the local community.

We consulted with the children and young people who currently attend the Twilight Cyber Cafe. They were asked how much more confidence the children have gained since attending and the average response was 8.6 out of 10. When asked how much more positive they felt about themselves, the average response was a 9.4 out of 10.

The Cyber Cafe helps create a common vision and sense of belonging for all of the community. It is a place where the diversity of people’s backgrounds and circumstances are appreciated and positively valued. Having a number of migrant children recently join the group, we believe and encourage that those from different backgrounds have similar life opportunities.

The project leads to improved well being which manifests itself in kindness and the ability to:

  • Resolve conflicts
  • Build friendships
  • Respect others
  • Communicate thoughts and feelings
  • Develop more positive feelings about others
  • Develop team spirit
  • Work collaboratively, share ideas and take on responsibilities for the benefit of the entire team
  • Work in a productive way
  • Share and take turns which builds and maintains healthy relationships even into adulthood
